There really is more to telecommunications cost management than I thought. It seems to me that there would be little more to telecommunications cost management than checking phone bills for employees abusing phone service on personal calls, but it is actually far more involved that I had originally thought. I did not know the ins and outs of telecommunications cost management too intimately until we hired a telecommunications cost management specialist to come in, review the current services we have in place and give suggestions on how to control costs and alter spending to make for more efficient telecommunications expenditures.
There was some manual reviewing of phone bills, going through each one and entering the billed items into a software program that was designed specifically to monitor telecommunications cost management. Apparently, manual bill review on a recurring month to month basis is not a popular practice anymore, and they recommended that we purchase and install a telecommunications cost management suite of applications that would take a lot of the maintenance away from our monthly billing processes. Until that gets put into place, the telecommunications cost management specialist is handling the bill review and porting the data into their program.
There were a lot of suggestions that were ultimately made. Some were impossible to enforce, such as recommendations on some employees not having a company provided cell phone as part of their compensation. Other ideas we will definitely look into putting into place. Many of these telecommunications cost management ideas are basic training, requiring phone and communications users to rethink their usage before they make a call. Some types of calls would be best suited to cell phones versus landlines, et cetera. There are many ways to enact telecommunications cost management on companies of any size, all it takes is a little investigation and maybe the right software to make it work.
