It can be embarrassing, but if you have hemorrhoids, a hemorrhoidectomy may be in your future. I suffered from them for years, but never did anything about it. They came and went over time, not always flared up, but when they did, it was quite unbearable. They would burn, they itched horribly and the bleeding was a bit disturbing. It was not very bad, but seeing blood coming from somewhere that it typically does not can be upsetting.
I went through this year after year because I was afraid to discuss it with my doctor, for many reasons. I was ashamed of it, so even bringing up the subject was so difficult. More than once I had it on my lips, then gave up. Then my imagination ran on. If I told him, he would want to look at them, so then I would have to be in a very embarrassing situation in the office. I wanted to avoid that entirely. Then, the treatment could mean surgery. If they were too bad that creams were not completely helping me, it could be that the doctor would say that I needed a hemorrhoidectomy. The concept sounds painful to me, and beyond that, even more embarrassing situations.
A whole room full of doctors and nurses performing a hemorrhoidectomy on me was just mortifying. As with many illnesses, it finally got bad enough that my wife marched into the doctor with me and told him what was going on. He put me totally at ease with what would happen during a hemorrhoidectomy, but the best part was, he said that it was not necessary. Turns out that my condition did not even warrant a hemorrhoidectomy and that I was making myself freak out for nothing. I was given a prescription and all has been much better since.
