Putting a proxy server in place requires more than building the device and placing it into use. The server requires you to configure proxy so that it functions in the way you want it to. There are many possible ways that you can configure proxy depending on the level you wish the proxy server to be involved in the internet connectivity of the client computers on the network.
During the design process, the intentions for the proxy server functionality should be considered, as you will want to configure proxy server settings prior to deploying the server into use. One of the major configuration options you will want to consider revolve around filtration of the internet traffic that traverses to client machines. A powerful feature of the proxy server is the ability to regulate not only the sites users are allowed to visit, but the content and nature of the sites and traffic itself. The proxy server can use a content rating system to disallow certain web sites that contain nudity or other undesired content type. In addition to that, there can also be keywords used to configure proxy that allow customization of the blocked site content prevented from being viewed by end users.
In order to configure proxy, you need to refer to the technical documentation of the proxy you are operating. Different versions of proxy servers operate on different platforms, and while they have similar functionality, the ways to configure proxy vary differently based on your exact version. Once you have the particulars of your flavor, or brand, you can then proceed to configure proxy using the security settings and restrictions that you decided on during the earlier planning phases of your deployment. To test, simply point a browser at your proxy server and go to a web site that you know will be blocked by the policy that you enacted.
