In this world of fast food and fast lifestyles, a new health predator is rearing its ugly head in every day lives. That health concern is known as acid reflux, and it is striking people of all ages.
For decades, acid reflux was a concern for older people only, people who ate poorly and lived fast, hard lifestyles. Usually, they were heavy drinkers, lovers of spicy acidic foods and chain smokers who wore away the delicate lining of their esophagus.
In recent years, however, acid reflux has become a concern for many different age groups. Doctors have discovered that many of the most popular foods among children, and these are served in schools as well, are the biggest factors in the beginning stages of acid reflux.
These foods include french fries, deep fried meats and cheeses, orange juice, acidic fruits and vegetables and other foods that are spicy, deep fried or acidic. While many children will breeze through eating these foods with no problem, a small number of children, particularly those who are high nerve or stress prone, will need to cut down on their intake of these foods to prevent heartburn and the beginning wear down of their esophagus, which would lead to acid reflux.
After the acid reflux damage has been done, of course, there is nothing for a parent or doctor to do but put their child on a medicine that will calm the symptoms and cut the foods that egg it on out of their diet. The child will also need to sleep propped up with two pillows and stay sitting after eating meals. Soda pop, another favorite of children and teens, will also need to be avoided, as will coffee and tea products.
The best thing to do is try an antacid at first, and if that does not work on the acid reflux then greater medicinal measures can be taken. Of course, this will all be up to the comfort level of the child and parent in question.
